Event Page | Organization Website

Several months after my stint as the Publicity Intern for the 2012 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, I was asked to hop on board again but this time as a member of the 2013 Screening Committee. As part of the Screening Committee, I watched about 12-15 short films every 2-3 weeks in contention to screen at the 2013 festival. I then evaluated each film on artistic merit, quality of storytelling, and on how well it employs the talent of an Asian-American filmmaker or actor. I attended one on-site meeting with festival staff, fellow committee members, and shorts curators to offer input on films and potential programs. As a program note writer, I watched two assigned features to write concise and catchy long-form and short-form notes for the official festival catalog.

San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival

Publicity Intern
San Francisco, CA
January 2012 to March 2012
Event Page | Organization Website

This internship combined all of my passions: an organization I support, an event I anticipate every year, cinema, the Asian American community, and a chance to see how the press works from the other side of the table. At the office, I assisted the PR manager with and fulfilled various duties: duplicating and organizing DVD screeners for press checkout, assembling festival and film press kits, editing press releases, outreach to media outlets and filmmakers, creating spreadsheets of volunteer schedules, communicating with the festival publicists at Larsen Associates, and compiling clippings of festival press coverage.  During the festival (March 8-18, 2012), I supervised press desk volunteers and helped check in press at screenings and events, as well as assisted the development/sponsorship department with green room setup and takedown and escorting talent into the green room and out of the venue at Castro Theatre screenings. I also helped with press sign-in and press kit distribution at the pre-festival press conference. I attended weekly festival/CAAM staff meetings and offered ideas and feedback about the festival, and reviewed films as an agenda item. Additionally, I was able to help the neighboring Marketing department with ideas and social media strategies for promotions. For further reference, please check out my previous volunteer work with the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

As a writer for this glossy (Directed towards Southern California college/university students)I made pitches for stories, but more often was assigned stories by the managing editor to write for the monthly publication. I primarily wrote film previews, articles on social media and celebrities, and features on health—the last of which involved direct interviews and contacting media relations specialists. In October 2010, I took on the task of interviewing One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush via phone for the December 2010 cover story and writing said story.

Golden Gate [X]Press

Multimedia Producer
San Francisco, CA
San Francisco State University
January 2010 to December 2010
Website | Select Samples

Working on the Golden Gate [X]Press was part of the San Francisco State University journalism department’s core requirements. The [X]Press is divided into four staffs: newspaper, magazine, online, and photography. I had originally selected to work on the magazine but due to the understaffing of the online team, I was placed there instead. However, I found it to be a fulfilling and rich experience and ended up staying in the online realm for my last semester at State. As a multimedia journalist, I worked with a variety of video/audio equipment and with various programs on Mac systems to produce content for the [X]Press website. These tools and programs included but were not limited to the Flip Ultra camcorder, Sony and Canon HD camcorders, Zoom audio recorder, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Garage Band, and Audacity. The position also included writing text to accompany multimedia pieces and as stand-alone stories. During my second semester, all the producers had to choose a topic to blog about weekly and my topic was on the Creative Arts department. I reviewed various productions and interviewed cast and crew members involved in them. Beyond the blogging aspect, producers had the opportunity to pitch their own stories all year round as long as they were relevant to the SF State community and city life. Some of the bigger issues I covered included the CSU-wide Day of Action protesting budget cuts and the 2010 special state election.

HollywoodLife.com

Entertainment Intern
Los Angeles, CA
May 2010 to August 2010
Website | Select Samples

My part-time unpaid internship at HollywoodLife.com is the most relevant experience I’ve had in terms of the field I’d like to get into. It was an internship that went beyond a 9-5 shift at the office. At the office, I monitored celebrity and entertainment news sites for breaking news, conducted research for news stories and features, participated in conference calls and phone interviews, and transcribed those calls and interviews, or radio broadcasts and other audio. I did some writing, mostly to accompany videos and photo galleries. On most days, including days off, I covered an assigned event and/or red carpet. These events included but were not limited to film premieres (Toy Story 3, Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore), award shows (VH1′s Do Something Awards, Spike TV Guys’ Choice Awards), launch parties (Blackberry Torch, Tease by Paris Hilton fragrance, Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” single launch), and press junkets (Lo Bosworth for Nivea). I shot videos of interviews and B-roll on my Flip Ultra camcorder and immediately recorded observations and transcribed interviews after the event and sent them to the editor for review. My biggest ongoing project during the internship was serving as a weekly correspondent for the FOX reality series So You Think You Can Dance. I attended weekly live tapings, wrote recaps and opinion pieces on each show, built connections with publicists, and interviewed the judges (Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, Adam Shankman), contestants, and special guests. For another large project, I covered fan events and interviewed fans anticipating The Twilight Saga: Eclipse world premiere.
